Korean Conglomerates (POSCO, Doosan and SK) set up fuel cell specialized company
Fuel cell power generation
Stability secured by careful management from design to operation
Recently, fuel cell power generation projects have been promoted in the metropolitan area, Gangwon-do, and Daejeon, and conflicts with local residents have raised more and more interests in fuel cell safety and environment.
Fuel cell power generation is regarded as the best-distributed power generation source that generates electricity and heat by electrochemical reaction without combustion process, unlike existing complex, thermal and nuclear power generation. In addition, the generation of harmful gases such as sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are the key factor for air pollution, is significantly less than that of existing coal-fired power plants.
Fuel Cell Power Generation's Design, installation and operation
in accordance with KOSHA and KGS
Regular inspection and safety management once a year after completion
Fuel cell power generation takes up about 40 times less than solar and about 80 times less than wind power generation in terms of the installation area, so it can be constructed less harming nature. In addition, unlike renewable energy sources, which are more sensitive to the climate environment, fuel cell power generation is not affected by climatic conditions and can be operated all year round except for periodic maintenance.
The most efficient operation can be done among the existing renewable energy source, and the environmental managing cost is quite low, and it has excellent strength in installation area and site selection compared with other renewable energy sources.
In the design phase, the fuel cell system is designed according to the safety regulations of Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency(KOSHA) and Korea Gas Safety Corporation (KGS) on explosion safety such as gas explosion, flammable and dangerous substance leakage. This stage includes seven or more risk reduction measures, including the design and verification of ventilation systems, the design of fire detection systems, and the design of safety valves, as defined by each safety agency.

As it is a power source that produces electricity, it complies with domestic and overseas standard safety standards and ensures reliability for operation by pre-use inspection by Korea Electrical Safety Corporation(KESCO) and regular electrical inspection once a year after completion. Electrical safety design such as automatic system disconnection and automatic power generation stop is also essential when it occurs.
The phosphate fuel cell (PAFC), which is currently installed and operated in the Korean domestic energy market, is about 162 ㎿ in size. Acquired fuel cell equipment certification from 11 domestic and overseas safety certification organizations. Just as KC certification is obtained to confirm whether household appliances used in daily life are developed and supplied in compliance with safety standards, fuel cell power generation facilities installed in Korea are facilities that produce and supply electricity and heat energy. Externally, they have obtained and certified safety certifications.
At the same time Korean conglomerates, POSCO, Doosan and SK are setting up fuel cell specialized company.
Major conglomerates in Korea are enhancing the fuel cell business at the age of the hydrogen economy. Fuel cell and hydrogen fuel cell is a device produces electrical energy by an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Just as battery packs act as engines for internal combustion engines in electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cells are one of the most important components in hydrogen fuel cell cars. Since the Korean government announced the roadmap to revitalize the hydrogen economy in Jan, 2019. Hydrogen fuel cells have emerged as the core of the hydrogen economy policy along with hydrogen-electric vehicles.
The industry expects the market of domestic fuel cell power generation will grow by 20% per year until 2040 driven by Korean government's policy to revitalize the hydrogen economy.
Because the economic outlook gives the positive signal, the Korean conglomerates plan to invest in long-term investments rather than focusing only on profitability. Unlike general power plants that use fossil fuels such as coal, fuel cells have no combustion process, so there are no separate by-products besides water and heat.
In addition, the same principle as the battery has the advantage that the power supply can be more stable than the solar power and wind power generation is affected by the natural environment, such as the weather. In the overseas market, hydrogen fuel cells are attracting attention as 'environmentally friendly energy', which is growing rapidly.
According to the US market research firm Navigant Research, the global hydrogen fuel cell market is expected to grow from US $ 1.74 billion in 2015 to US $ 10.33 billion this year. However, industry officials explain that it is still in the early stages of business and it will take time for fuel cell power plants to expand and achieve full-scale results. To date, there is a problem that the demand for hydrogen fuel cells for power generation is insufficient compared to the investment in technology development such as fuel cell stability and efficiency improvement.
